Heavy Hands
28 - Steven "The Warman" Wright Interview (trainer of Johny Hendricks)

We've got a very special guest for you this week!

Connor and Pat are joined by Steven "The Warman" Wright, striking coach of Team Takedown, and most notably of UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks. December 6th, Hendricks defends his title for the first time--in a rematch with the man over whom he won it. Robbie Lawler came very close to finishing Hendricks in the first bout, but Hendricks proved too tough, too skilled, and too determined to be the champ.

Steven details some of the improvements that Johny has made as a striker, and goes in-depth into his method for turning a wrestler, Team Takedown's stock and trade, into a killer kickboxer.

Connor and Pat have some truly exciting fights to discuss this week.

First up on the docket is Pacquiao vs Algieri--Algieri is a bit unheralded, but he is one of the more interesting stylistic matchups Pacquiao has seen in some time. A long-limbed boxer, Algieri's greatest limitation against Pacquiao would seem to be his inexperience and proneness to inactivity.

On the MMA side of combat sports, yet another UFC Fight Night offers a surprisingly tantalizing night of martial action, as top featherweights Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson duke it out for some sort of number one contendership--no one really knows with Conor McGregor in the mix these days.

All of that and more are broken down in exhaustive, technical detail on this episode of Heavy Hands!

It's a weekend full of fantastic fights, but you'll have to do a bit of channel changing to ensure consistent quality. First Connor and Pat break down the impromptu slugfest that is Hunt vs Werdum for the interim heavyweight title. That's the main event of UFC 180, which is co-headlined by Jake Ellenberger vs Kelvin Gastelum, an intriguing fight that should tell us once and for all if Ellenberger is done as a potential contender, and if Gastelum is the new man to watch at welterweight.

Over on Spike we've got a very interesting rematch between Michael Chandler and Will Brooks for the Bellator lightweight belt. Pat predicts this one will look like a more athletic Dustin Poirier (Brooks) against a less athletic Chad Mendes (Chandler), but at lightweight, which... sounds great to me!

Also, one of the sport's best prospects in Justin Gaethje defends his WSOF lightweight belt against Melvin Guillard. Lots of great action, with some really interesting analysis to boot--just keep your remote handy.

It's a weekend packed with UFC fights, and Pat and Connor have a unique way of looking at them. Today your hosts discuss the concept of "style." What is a fighting style? How does it impact an analysts perceptions of a fight, and how does it affect a fighter's performance against another athlete of a same or different style?

We focus this discussion on many fighters, but featured heavily are some of this weekend's most prominent competitors, including Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold, John Lineker, and Ian McCall.

All of that and more on this episode of Heavy Hands!
