Heavy Hands

On a cold dim Cincinnati morning, Connor sat down to chat with one Daði Ástþórsson, who was surely experiencing an even dimmer and colder morning in Iceland at the time. The friend, former trainer, and business partner of popular friend of the show Luis Monda, Daði is an incredibly knowledgeable trainer of many young boxers, and in many ways is the originator of many of the ideas that Connor professes on the show and in his articles. Enjoy this discussion with one of the finest craftsmen in the sport.

A few weeks ago Connor sat down with Sifu Wilson Pitts, trainer extraordinaire of both boxing and Bagua Kung Fu, to talk about the ways in which those two martial arts overlap, and how principles from both can be better applied to MMA. Now Heavy Hands finally brings you this belated interview with one of the most knowledgable trainers around.

Connor and Corey sit down for an intimate episode focusing on you, the listener, and the questions and comments you've been sending over the course of the first ten historic episodes of Heavy Hands.

Connor has some suggestions for those of you looking to get into MMA or striking as a sport or form of self defense, and some words of advice on how to find the right gym and trainer for you.

We also fulfill a few listener requests to analyze the concept of footwork, and how it can be applied for defensive and offensive purposes in a fight.

Enjoy, and keep sending us your comments! We won't be satisfied until we finally get some hatemail.

Heavy Hands is back with the first episode of 2014! We ring in the new year with a recap of the startling, shocking, and just a little disgusting events of UFC 168, which saw middleweight champ Chris Weidman retain his title by snapping all-time-great Anderson Silva's shin across his own.

Joining us is Cincinnati's own Juice Lee, an emcee of real quality and an avid fan of mixed martial arts. We hope you're looking forward to more weekly episodes of Heavy Hands throughout the rest of 2014; we certainly are!

Heavy Hands is happy to bring the biggest opportunity for the show yet, an interview with Matt "The Immortal" Brown. Matt was kind enough to give us a little time to discuss the finer points of his game. Though he even defines himself as a "technical brawler," there is a depth of strategic and technical understanding to Matt's style. There is also a deadly simplicity to his fighting approach. He tells us how he approaches every fight with the mindset of reacting and adapting to the opponent, going wherever the fight takes him and trying always to finish the opponent.

We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did.

Today Heavy Hands was lucky enough to have Lyte Burly on the show, a practitioner and trainer of boxing and the little-known New York-bred art of 52 Blocks, a.k.a. Jailhouse Rock, which was born in the prisons of 70s and 80s New York. Mr. Burly tells about his training philosophies, the fighters he looks up to and tries to emulate, and the defensive mentality that makes 52 the best system for street defense, and one that breeds better-disciplined boxers and mixed martial artists.

We're very happy to have Mr. Burly on the show, so we hope you enjoy the interview!

Bloody Elbow's Dallas Winston joins Connor and Corey this week for an in-depth look at the most controversial UFC main event since, well... Gustafsson vs. Jones. Prepare for a long one, because you're in for about two hours of discussion on Johny Hendricks, Georges St-Pierre, and the many other fighters to grace the 167 card with impressive performances (split into three manageable segments, of course).

As always, let us know what you think, and enjoy!

Episode six is finally here, and it's a big one because we're about to witness a big fight. That's right, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre rides again, and this time he aims to defend his belt in his eleventh consecutive title fight.

Your hosts get into the techniques that make GSP's relatively simple game so effective, even at the top of one of the toughest divisions in MMA. We also discuss the chances of challenger Johny Hendricks, but our hopes aren't high for the bearded one.

Enjoy!

Part two of this week's episode features Bloody Elbow writer T. P. Grant, a specialist in the the grappling aspects of MMA. He and Connor discuss the evolution of the guillotine in MMA, from the last resort of those with no takedown defense, to the top position killer of modern mixed martial artists.

Part one of Heavy Hands this week brings back boxing trainer Luis Monda to discuss the results of Timothy Bradley vs Juan Manuel Marquez, and how Tim Bradley is becoming, like Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather, a master spoiler.

Luis also explains the differences between pure boxing and boxing for MMA, and the similarities.

Finally, a discussion of the "hard right hand" that Luis teaches, as requeste by listeners, including a harrowing tale of Connor hurting his shoulders because he's scared of the punching bag.
